Suggested Palliative Measures for Phailin Cyclone Affected Eastern Coastal Districts

  • Drain outexcess water from the inundated fields.
  • Remove  extremely broken plants from the orchards.
  • When plants are broken due to excess winds-- Provide Staking where ever possible for physical support.
  • Remove dead plants of East Coast Tall var. of coconut. Discourage planting tall varieties.
  • Recommend the dwarf varieties like Dwarf Cavendish as in banana and in Coconut dwarf varieties like: Kalpa Raksha, Chowghat Orange Dwarf (COD) and Chowghat Green Dwarf (CGD).
  • When the growing tip or crown is twisted, correct the positions wherever possible.

  • Avoid all tall coconut varieties like East Coast Tall and recommend the dwarf varieties or Tall × Dwarf varieties in coastal or cyclone prone areas.
  • Grow wind breaks at appropriate spacings from main plantation around all orchards.
  • Shelterbelts may be planned around banana plantations.
  • Remove the affected banana plants and allow 1 or 2 sword suckers per mound in place of the removed plant.
  • In cashewnut, cut the damaged twigs, branches and other parts and apply copper oxychloride or  Bordeaux mixture / paste for avoiding fungal infection and other secondary infections.
  • In case of paddy, transplant only wind / cyclone and heavy rainfall tolerant varieties like INDRA.
  • INDRA var. of paddy can tolerate submerged conditions for a longer period.
  • Apply recommended doses of fertilizers.
  • Follow good phytosanitary measures.
