DG, ICAR Inaugurated Brain Storming Session on Future Climate Change Research in Agriculture

A one day Brain Storming Session was organized on 23-Feb-2017 at NASC, New Delhi. Dr K Alagusundaram, DDG (NRM & AE), ICAR in his welcome remarks felt the need to continue NICRA project with focused objectives. Dr Ch. Srinivasa Rao, Director, CRIDA made a brief presentation on the background and purpose of the meeting, with significant outcomes of NICRA project and its potential impact on Adaptation and Mitigation of climate change in agriculture sector.  He provided the road map for future NICRA Program inviting suggestions from the Hon’ble DG and other members. Dr SM Virmani, Chairman, NICRA Expert Committee briefed on the importance of climate change research in Indian Agriculture.

Dr T Mohapatra, Secretary, DARE & DG, ICAR in his inaugural address appreciated the outcome of NICRA which is felt at National level, and appreciated the progress made so far. He quoted Contingency plans and Vulnerability Atlas are some of the most significant outputs and widely accepted across various Ministries and Departments in the Government. He further emphasized to showcase NICRA outputs internationally by publishing in high impact journals. He suggested to rope-in other Departments in the project for collaboration and further expansion.  He requested the delegates to deliberate to identify gaps in climate change research, priority areas, technical program and replication plan of NICRA outputs and transform villages towards climate resilience. The meeting was attended by NICRA Expert Committee members, DDG (AS), several ADGs, Special invitees from other Ministries viz., DAC, Min. of Water Resources, Senior Officers from ICAR, few Directors from ICAR institutes, PIs of NICRA project from various partner institutes.
