Technical Review Workshop of Strategic Research Partner Institutes (Horticulture Sciences) under NICRA organized at ICAR-IISR, Kozhikode on 20th May, 2019


      Technical Review Workshop of Horticulture institutes under strategic Research component of NICRA was held at Director’s Conference Room, ICAR-IISR, Kozhikode on 20th May, 2019. The session was chaired by Dr S Bhaskar, ADG (AAF&CC), ICAR, New Delhi and co-chaired by Dr SK Pandey, Ex-Director, ICAR-Central Potato Research Institute (CPRI), Shimla & NICRA Expert Committee member.


      Dr K Nirmal Babu, Director, ICAR-Indian Institute of Spices Research (IISR) welcomed the participants and highlighted the vulnerability of spice crops to climate variability and change. Dr G Ravindra Chary, Director (Actg.), ICAR-CRIDA in his initial remarks emphasized the need for effective utilization of infrastructure facilities and manpower provided under NICRA project and come out with summary of outcomes from each institute.  Dr SK Pandey, NICRA Expert Committee member expressed his satisfaction to the progress made over the years and advised to critically analyse the results. Dr S Bhaskar expressed the importance of crop planning to address vulnerability of vegetables & fruits to changing climate followed by presentations by PIs from ICAR-Indian Institute of Horticultural Research (IIHR), Bengaluru; ICAR-Indian Institute of Vegetable Research (IIVR), Varanasi & ICAR-Directorate of Onion and Garlic Research (DOGR), Pune. The progress of the previous year and the technical program for the next year was critically reviewed and suggestions were provided by the expert committee.


       The expert committee member opined that there should be detailed studies to understand pollen viability and stigma receptivity under high temperature conditions. The positive effects of climate change in horticulture crops also should be studied and documented. There was also suggestion to bring out policy briefs for horticulture commodities which are being studied under NICRA. The meeting ended with vote of thanks to the chair by Dr M Prabhakar, PI, NICRA.
